Daily sketch Feb - Day 1 - Urbanfox

OKAY, I’m going to do a sketch everyday this month, I’m sure I can manage… Here is day 1, the urbanfox, tried to redesign an old character design to feel a bit more individual... So it's patchwork cloak for this new costume sketch.

London Underground’s demon hunter, called in when they disturb an old plague pit, or an ancient room locked away for years that they find covered in cryptic writing, or maybe, just a giant demon stomping through the bakerloo line, they say it’s a points failure, but we know the truth, this man is down there, his dog too.

I imagine him with a lot of holy relics and i’d like to crazy up the tech hellboy style, all on loan from the british museum of course.

Based on a sketch on the train home.

I wanted to try and think of a more unusual weapon design, so here is a crazy electric gun, you strap the bellows to your leg, the pumping of the brushes builds up an electric charge that is fired from the end of the barrel. I imagine a huge bolt blasting forth crackling away.

Couple of things,

Sketch of an island from the outskirts of a canal city I’ve been working on, from the same world as the Oxspindle.

I find generally weapons design pretty boring most of the time, so here is a crazy electric gun, you strap the bellows to your leg, the pumping of the brushes builds up an electric charge that is fired from the end of the barrel.

Beauty and the beast redesign,

I realised that belle is the only obviously middle class fairy tale princess, so i decided to give her a sort of Samurai style, the shogunate eventually becoming of a middle class status, i could be wrong if someone would like to help me out of my ignorance I'd be very grateful. So she is a warrior that works for a noble lord, an archer most of the time from her high vantage point on her monstrous mount.

Very fun re-design, now which one to do next!?

I haven't got around to scanning any life drawing, here is the updated oxspindle!

The academic city powered by a huge golem ox. The airships travel with the belongings slung underneath, pulled up when they are needed, this spares a lot of room once in flight. You can keep your bath and table tennis table out the way, might hit a few pigeons though.

So, to follow the previous post about the world building me and Sam lloyd are doing, here is one of the centres of academic excellence, it's built on the back of a giant golem kudu, that constantly winds a shaft, powering the city almost endlessly. It's main exports are education and knowledge, more to follow, we have a lot of ideas for this place. Expect more steampunk, airships, alchemy and.... ideas!

And I've been doing a lot of drawing of figures to try and my moving anatomy much better. So i tried to apply it to something, here is a magic fran!

A sketch from today, a few hours on a guy who's airship mother ship is floating off after a battle, he's been left in the snow. It's a bit of a teaser image for a personal world building project I've been working on with Sam lloyd. Expect odd cities, steampunk, alchemy and a fair amount of dystopia.

My fairy tale princess redesign project isn't dead! They just need rendering up and finishing.

Here is Ariel, a very fun costume design. Tried to mix nautical themes with swashbuckling. I still need to fill out a lot of the detail from the original pencils. Fishscale legging are fashionable right? Pufferfish jackets are cool yes? Ah well, here she is :) Lots of work still to do, all painted in photoshop as usual. She isn't as steampunk as cinderella, but i'm hoping they can sit in the same world.

Hello! I have a lot of images on the go at the moment, here is a work in progress, it was fished from my hard drive looking all out of shape, so I've moved around the composition, just need to finish rendering and tweak it. The birds are just placeholders, as is that man's gun :P

I've always been fascinated by sinking or sunken giant ships, something about their integral power, and then the power of nature to throw them around like toys.

As usual it's all messing about in Photoshop.

More stuff from my book done on the bouncy met line home.

First one is Fen Elf on his giant moorhen mount, i thought a moorhen would make a better mount in wetlands with their long legs. I didn't want to do him completely armoured up, but perhaps has been called to a war council, or to join an expeditionary force by writ of the star chamber, oops disappearing into my own world there. So here he is mid travel :)

And this is a dress based on the patterns and markings of an owl. I suppose i'm getting a few of these fashion , costume sketches together.

I have been out, in the lovely sun. It's lovely. We are lucky enough to have a woods at the bottom of our road and a giant common in the middle of our town, so the sun is making my world lovely and green, well when i'm not on the tube from said common to lahndaahhn. Where is this rural idyll on the tube network? I shall leave you to guess.

I've been arting again, lots of stuff this week as i took a few days holiday. HOLIDAY, madness. Hello!

I've been redesigning the Fairy tale princesses on the rough premise of making them warriors in some way. This was a result of a discussion with the pixie as were on our way through rush hour traffic to pinewood.

Here's the sketches and WIP of the first, it's Cinderella, she's a glass blower and the leader of a peasants revolt, fed up of being held down by the bourgeoisie. I think glass blown Molotovs work well with slippers :)

Heylo blog checkers!

I'm having a real sci-fi time atm, started getting back into it, just a quick drop of a sketch i did earlier, ref'd from a shot taken by the ISS. The quick interceptor design is based on the underside the the space shuttle uses for atmospheric reentry. I tried to suggest both atmospheric and vacum based engines. I'll upload some more sketches of ships based on those theories.

I'm thinking a change of tact is in order for my blog. The reason i updated weekly was to give myself a marker, a visible point at which i could measure how much work i was doing weekly, looking for patterns in subjects and media to see what i was missing. Now i'm doing a lot of drawing i will only be uploading what i consider good work, instead of everything i do, hopefully this will force me to really work on a solid standard. I will still try and update weekly though, but probably a bit more choice cuts.

I haven't been drawing that much interesting recently, just planes and trying to get my foundations better, this is for two reasons i think, i'm in a bit of a lul and i've been realising how much I've been living off shortcuts and symbolism in the place of true drawing. A circle with two dots and a line always looks like a head, but to really be able to communicate i need to know a lot more than that. Enough rambling, sketches -

I've been chatting a lot to Yip, a time traveling creator of fabulous art, his link is on the right.

Did this after learning some stuff from him, about 2 and a half hours, got part way through, redrew the design.

Met up with Daniel Harries, Fran, Chloe and Kate on Saturday, did some huntarian drawing, some sketching, walking and chatting.

Hello there folk and moorhens!

Here's some more scanned pages from sitting on the train, they are probably just further on the scanned pages from a few posts back, been trying to slow down and really think about what i'm drawing, not just drawing for the sake of putting something on paper.

We had a mega two day slog of seeing the brighton degree show, some really nice stuff in printed textiles and 3d. Also went round brighton, then looked around london for somewhere curl up in a ball closer to work.

And some skull and skeleton study from the huntarian, and some commuter doing his crossword i think.

The funny machine on the right was inspired by the kid on the leaf blower in up, i was trying to design a bikey thing that could be attached to a sail.

45min doodle of my camera, colours started coming together, construction on the otherhand... so many drawing errors i almost didn't post it, but meh, i am all my flaws, i don't let my proffesional work sit like this :) but then i do that sober through the day :)

Quick warm up in the morning of my wacom pen well sitting on my trusty tough disc GORT.

If you ever need an external hard drive i bought a freecom tough disc two and a half years ago and it's served me really well, i've thrown it at walls and people just for silliness, he's still going strong. Also, always name your hard drives after sci fi robots!

Haru,

No sketches this week. But i did go and see Prince of persia on friday night, lovely to see shots we worked on while i was at Peerless coming up, not a bad film either. Other than that i've been out walking a lot and enjoying the sun on my monitor tan.

Hey there all in blog land :)

The more art i do, the more pieces i work on from start to finish, the more i realise the vital vital importance of the drawing, the accuracy and the communication. I scraped almost a days work this week after i realised though nicely rendered, i had jumped in without really considering the strength of the image and it's value in communication. I then re did the piece from a new composition, much quicker, and already much better. This has manifested itself in me going back to basics, more cubes, more skulls, and looking at my good old trusty bridgman book, but coming to it this time with a lot more understanding.

Spent the weekend in brighton visiting an old friend and playing dnd, imagination very much full, but no pages to show :)

Hello there! spring is in the air, the trees are budding, it's all looking up.

So i did another clay bust.

I went OUTSIDE and did some water colouring, trying to learn it so i can do some more on the move colour work. I used to be very much a gauche person, I might try going back to it, but i tend to paint very heavily with it, watercolour forces me to slow down and consider layering, which carries over too PS, convenient! This is tiny, A6 ish. I'll try and do some more.

Oh and a rocket pack.

Which i did because i designed this rubbish, left the rocket pack as a place holder while i researched on, i've got the 9 iterations about somewhere... You guys seem to like that sorta thing.

Sorrryyy, i seem to be unable to keep track of days during a four day weekend, this day just devolved into DAY BEFORE WORK WEEK IS BLOG UPDATE DAY. Which, as my head has just realised, is Monday, blaahh, balls.

So this week i did muchly work, and i also did 35 presentable character designs in two days, they were just line sketches, but thats kinda the most creative period, steeped in costume designs and thoughts about appropriate equipment, awesomely good fun. But i did leave me a little foofly for work on the way home, anyway, you'll have to put up with this.

And inspired by mister baines, i did some sketches based on some busts, good fun, much harder than i thought. aaarrghh.

I also saw baby badgers :D :D :D at secret world.

Hello! I went down to bristol for zara's birthday and caught up with a load of illustrators.

Work is mad and long which means i'm not really challenging myself on the way home, but when i can post up that stuff you'll see i've been doing lots of things :)

Heyloes!

So, me and tom from work have been spending our lunch breaks drawing skulls at the huntarian, very good for me to do.

Oh and mazz bought the art of how to train your dragon, the new dreamworks film, so i did some studies of the beautiful storyboards.

Interior as promised and the start of a spoon tiara :P

ANNND, awesomely went to life drawing at the mall galleries, great atmosphere and lovely models, i am SO rusty tho, this is all i turned out, girl on the left was my warm up.

I need to sleep now i've been canoing all day.

Heylo! Alas, since getting a job as a concept artist i really can't show as much work as i used to, which is a bit rubbish, it's also clear to me from these scans that i am often drawing the same things, as my leisure time i can see why, but it's not really going anywhere, so i think this week i'll try and take the ruler on the train and get some proper designs done. Expect interiors :)

Hey everyone, update is a bit light this week, been a bit soc-ial and all the painting is tied to work.
So here are some sketches, most are done on the way home, on the train when i'm super tired, so they are a bit hit and miss.

Also, i've been reading a lot about construction, realising i need to work on it, so i have drawn some cubes and stuff.

Sunday, went to the bucks goat centre with mazz, great fun, but still a bit too cold, you can see pretty quickly which ones i did with numb fingers due to the nose dive in quality. Note to self, gloves.

Mid week blog update!! Because i've been doing quite a lot of stuff i wanted to post some now, also it'll mean i have to be productive over the next 3 days to have another post.

Hello person who checks my blog, i have left my hard drive at work, so can only show you a few scanned pages from my travelling book. I keep a layout pad for compositional thumbs and such, but it's not really stuff to be scanned and shown, more for my own process.

Steampunk style red kite? unsure..

And the first page of the new book, i hate that first page, lots of pressure.

Hello hello! all my favourite peoples, It is I, BADGER.

This week i have been mostly learning stuff at work, proper post production stuff, and doing maya, so my time to create pretty pictures was inhibited.

Luckily the weekend was awesome!!

Me and Mazz went to the steampunk exhibition in oxford, at the museum for the history of science, very fun, very nice range of new creations and old old things, like brunel's instruments!!

Then i saw avatar (i know, i know, LATE) Which was really very good, i was expecting it to be pretty good, but blew me away really, nice work. Neville page did very nice work, infact all the production arting was amazing.

First, here's some art:

The thing here is, i had a composition break through looking at repin and some other russians, something just seemed to click and i felt i had a better understanding of using thirds, edges and silhuette to creat compositions. Composition has always plagued me in enviros, So these are the thumbs i made immediately after, and then today spent a few hours trying to paint one up.

Hello! Happy new year all!

So it's been busy and New yeary and two important birthdays.

Here's what i sqoozeled in:

Some generic steampunky doodles, the one on the left is a steampunk chestnut roaster, i'll try finish these.

Messsing about with colouring methods on this, quite fun, parts i may use when colouring again.

OH GOD OH GOD OH GOD, How is christmas coming so fast!? did someone mount christmas to a tinsel covered holly powered present filled freight train and not tell me!?

Anyway, i spent some time doodling on my joyous pinstripe filled commute.

Here are some finished pages, the others have important stuff to be added like argyle and sparkles.

Doing this in colour is like playing the sims, i'll have to make more interesting shaped rooms next time or i might as well have just played the sims.

This month's art ac, not too pleased with the stance, i would like to make him more lumbering and the banker thinner, anyway, it's a banker bot, standing blocking his vault.

Heyloes! Busy long week for me at work, luckily the weekend was free, so i was finally able to get on with things that can go in the portfolio with a lovely run of pixie supplied coffee.

So here's a base colour run of a more technical look at the red kite's jet pack.

Hello! i'm ill, or was, i'm feeling better.

Which is rubbish, i felt a bit bad on friday, woke up saturday feeling all over the place, so my weekend has been wiped out with sleeping it off and trying to get some vitamin C in me.

Thankyou to my pixie for coming over and supplying a surprise care package to keep me well :)

Feeling much better now though, so hopefully feel good this week.

hello! Busy week at work, what with up at half six home at half eight, but i bring some doodles from the train and some enviro sketches i slotted in this afternoon.

Also went to the eurogamer expo on friday with mazlan, went to their careers fair bit and got some cool feedback about concept art from the artists there, basically none of them said the same thing, so you really need to tailor your work to the company you want to work for. This was both good and bad, but really very useful, anyway enough chit chat, art:

New job, long hours, very busy getting to know what i'm needed for. So sorry this is a lame update.

Went to the national portrait gallery one lunch break and again realised how much there is to learn about economy from sargent.

Doodles of business men on the train home will have to do till i can get back to life drawing.

Next week some foreground and general enviro studies, still not happy with that stuff, i know it can be a lot better.

Hello! after my trip to Heythrop zoological gardens last Sunday, this Sunday me and mazz continued our adventures and went to The Cotswold Wildlife Park which was super fun. The best selection of owls I've seen in a while, and skunks are awesome!

When i wasn't there i mostly painted enviros, that aren't full ready for the world, here is some stuff that is:

Oh yeah I'm back life drawing, as you can see from the warm ups especially i was really rusty, Doing it HERE at the Queens Park Art Centre in Aylesbury, lovely group, took the hedge along too.

Too much value on that knee.

Lemurs don't stay still for longer than 30 secs or so, so super quick lines then as much tone as you can manage.

Owls stay still a tiny bit longer, mostly move to stare at you O.o

Heyloes! Here is some stuff i cobbled together this week.

Firstly, an illo in gouche done for the art-actuate group for september's theme swine flu.

"Me and Wil were all ready for the zombie apocalypse, but with that genetic pattern it's not even going to mutate. Ah well the idiots panicing was funny. Maybe next time i'l have my dystopia."

And trying to get more ideas quicker into my sketchbook, being less precious. These are a bit cliche, but then the first stuff always is.
